Building Green Part 1
Are you remodeling your home? Our friends Steve and JD did a great looking renovation. What made it something special was the fact that it was done using green home products and environmentally friendly processes. Reusing what they could, recycling what they didn’t need, FSC Certified wood, reclaimed flooring, soy based wall insulation, solar water heating and electricity, recycled rubber roofing, and the list goes on and on. We documented the progress over a year, and put together a 17 minute video from start to end of the construction. Hope you enjoy “Building Green”

How does going green affect the Greenhouse Effect?
I’m doing a science project with my friends and i need help one one certain subject of it. I was assingned the greenhouse effect and i need to know how going green helps reverse the greenhouse effect. Can anyone help me?
Going green helps reserve energy. When you reserve energy you lower how much gases (ex: carbon dioxide) is released.
The greenhouse effect is gases that go into the atmosphere and warm up the temperature much like a greenhouse.
Wow okay so um I explained that really poorly which is sad since this is one of my better subjects, but hopefully you can understand this enough to start on your project.
you can e-mail me if you need more help.
How much has all this going green actually helped the planet?
Global warming is a growing problem across the world and all the smartest minds are working on how to fix it. As it last stood the average temperature increase world wide is roughly 2 degrees on average.
In the past year or so even with the depression going green has become a big thing and everyone is now starting to do it. So in this roughly year time in going green how much have we (humans) actually saved the planet or should i say slowed down the destruction of it?
I don’t know if you can actually measure it. There are too many factors to consider, but I do see stories that show we are making an impact. As you said the recession has had a great impact on the green movement. Many people are learning that being frugal is good for the planet. Some of the indicators I’ve seen are hundreds of plants closed in China, That means fewer emissions and toxins being released into the environment by making cheap plastic things for us to toss into the landfill. There was a story out of Southern CA that said garbage production from homes had declined about 50%, and construction waste had declined enough that they were able to temporarily close one of the area’s landfills. I also see an awareness of the toxins we have in our cleaning and household products. Just look at the local grocery store shelves to see labeling for everything from biodegradable to phosphate free.
The best part of the recession is people have been taken off of autopilot. They are thinking more about their choices. Once you learn the impact of your choice, it’s hard to go back to bad habits.
How can I get my community involved in going green?
I’m entering the Siemens “We Can Change the World Challenge” along with 2 of my classmates. I live in a co-op so it shouldn’t be too hard to get people in my building involved, but I still need ideas on how we’re going to help the environment. Our topic is “going green” (I know it’s not very specific, but it’s what our professor assigned us.) Ideas like fliers and stickers are what we’re looking for as well as some ways to get the whole school involved. Thanks in advance! ![]()
The fliers will be printed on my homemade paper (made out of recycled paper towels)
You can set up a recycling center in a common area and label each bin, glass, paper, plastic, etc. that would be something that everyone could participate in.
Or maybe planting trees or doing a clean up.
Good luck.
What are the harmful effects of not going green?
I am currently doing an animation project themed “Going Green in the Fantasy World”. I more of less have the story concept in my head but i need this information to develop my story…
One of the reasons I have decided to use earth friendly products was learning what was in my cleaning and beauty supplies. There are a host of chemicals that can harm you in many of the products we use in our homes. Since we don’t eat these things they aren’t required to put the ingredients on the label, so it is hard to tell what is in them. Here are a few items I avoid. We absorb about 40% of what goes onto our skin, so you are putting these chemicals into your system when you use them.
Bleach, when mixed with hot water it becomes a vapor and damages lunges. It is found in almost all bathroom cleaners.
Ammonia, damages lungs as well.
Antibacterial anything, this is a fungicide. Triclosan is the common one found in soaps, deodorants, face cleansers, body spray, etc. It is a dioxin and is known to cause cancer, reproductive toxicity, endocrine and organ system toxicity and it builds up in the body. It is already banned or restricted in Canada and Japan. Not to mention many scientists and Dr.s believe we are creating super viruses by the over use of antibacterial soaps and hand cleansers.
Cosmetics are even worse, many mimic hormones and are believed to increase the risk of both breast and uterine cancers. Many have formaldehyde and other strong preservatives. Fragrances are another group of harmful chemicals that are known to increase the risk of cancers, reproductive, endocrine and organ toxicity.
